COASTAL BIRDS
On the south end of Wrightsville Beach lies a special secret - a busy nesting area for our coastal birds: Common Terns, Least Terns, American Oystercatchers. During their migration, they stop on our beach to mate, lay eggs, and raise their chicks. The North Carolina Audubon Society's Bird Steward Program makes sure that these birds and their eggs are protected during the mating season (April - Aug). Harbor Island Garden Club's junior garden club (Rooty Rascals) has partnered with the Bird Steward Program to make signs each year warning visitors to keep their distance. They also learn about these birds to join a new generation to protect and save these coastal birds.
The NC Audubon society has weekly walks during the mating on Monday mornings May - mid-August. Meet at the gazebo at the entrance to the south end (Access 43). For more information, visit www.wbbirdsteward.blogspot.com.
