A LITTLE ABOUT US ...
Club Flower: Gaillardia (Beach Daisy) |
The Harbor Island Garden Club was organized in 1952. The present membership - forty-nine (49) active members, ten (10) honorary members, two (2) lifetime members, and four (4) emeritus members - is comprised of full-time Wrightsville Beach residents, children of current members, and members who lived at Wrightsville Beach when they joined the club but later moved inland. All new prospective members must be sponsored by current members of the Club.
The Harbor Island Garden Club has a reputation for being an outstanding club, winning many awards over the years. Actively involved in community beautification, the club has worked closely with various city programs for environmental improvements. Each year, our members donate thousands of volunteer hours to maintaining the island gardens, supporting our junior gardening program, raising funds, and preserving our coast. Our organizational memberships include: 2024-25 Executive Board Vicki Dull, President Karen King, First Vice President DeLaine Farrell, Second Vice President Laura Kay Berry, Third Vice President Katy Cofer & Heidi Lee, Fourth Vice Presidents Melinda Walker, Recording Secretary Wylene McDonald & Francine Streich, Corresponding Secretaries Beth Golder, Treasurer Club colors: Shell Pink and Sea GreenClub Poem On day three of the creation God looked down and then he smiled For clinging bravely to a sand dune Appeared a daisy, growing wild. Not an ordinary daisy - This one seemed to take its cues From the colors of the sunset Gold and crimson's vibrant hues. Needing a little cultivation Always facing toward the sun. How we love this humble flower In our hearts, it's number one. - By Fran Russ (1930 - 2024), HIGC Lifetime Member |
