CURRENT PROJECTS WE SUPPORT

Harbor Way GardensOur flagship project that acts as a gift to our local community, loop walkers and visitors daily. The garden features a unique fountain in the center of the garden surrounded by two additional fountains and a designated walkway for memorials and honorariums to loved ones and to local companies and individuals for recognition of their support for our community. The garden has a wide variety of plantings, a children's and adults libraries to exchange books. The Harbor Island Garden Club maintains the garden year round as well as two other gardens located on the beach in small park areas.

Blue Star Memorial Highway MarkerThe Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker was sponsored by Harbor Island Garden Club in conjunction with The town of Wrightsville Beach in November 2023. The Marker and memorial garden is maintained by the Harbor Island Garden Club. A recognition ceremony is held annually to support these veterans and their families. The Harbor Island Garden Club is in the process of establishing a section of our Harbor Way Gardens to additionally recognize these brave members of our community and their families.

Wrightsville Beach Elementary (Rooty Rascals)Harbor Island Garden Club supports our local elementary school through the establishment of our Junior Gardeners Club (Rooty Rascals), a club that allows elementary children to participate in educational programs and field trips to improve their knowledge about our local wildlife, environmental challenges, waterways and of course, our local plant life. We also assist in the 5th grade graduation providing corsages, refreshments, speakers and handling logistics for the school as needed.

Town of Wrightsville Beach SupportThe Harbor Island Garden Club has a long tradition of working closely with the Town of Wrightsville Beach. Highlights include:
- Hosting an annual employee appreciation luncheon - Supporting the annual Christmas house decorating contest - Funding some of the Christmas decorations and lights - Decorating and hanging Christmas wreaths around Wrightsville Beach |

Floral Education and OutreachHarbor Island Garden Club supports community members who may need a visit or uplifting flower arrangement due to sickness, immobility or other concerns. Members in our club regularly provide floral training and education to our members and to our community.

Arbor Day CelebrationThe Harbor Island Garden Club holds an annual tree planting and celebration at Wrightsville Beach. The ceremony and celebration is open to our entire community and visitors, includes participation from our children at Wrightsville Beach Elementary, local dignitaries, music and refreshments. It is a nod and act of gratitude to the beautiful city in which we are privileged to work, live and play.

President's ProjectEach year, the president of Harbor Island Garden Club allocates funding and support to a special project. The 2024 President's Project will provide a $2,500 scholarship to a student in the
Horticulture Department at Cape Fear Community College. |
